COLLEGE EARNS HIGH MARK IN MATH COMPETITION |

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Eight standout students helped Grove City College place 99th in this year’s national William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition for undergraduates. The challenging mathematics exam was completed by 4,036 students representing 546 colleges, totaling 439 competing teams.
The eight students who participated in the exam include senior Lucas Waddell of Belleville, Pa.; Brad Weaver of Lebanon, Pa.; senior Lindsay Willett of Summerville, S.C.; senior Shaun Mills of Olean, N.Y.; sophomore Mark Matthews of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; Rebecca Easterling of Fredericksburg, Va.; Susannah Johnson of Willow Grove, Pa. and Trevor Partridge of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The students were coached by Dr. Gary Thompson, chair of the department of mathematics and professor of mathematics.
The exam, which has been offered annually since 1938, consists of two three-hour sittings supervised by faculty of participating schools with winning teams and individuals receiving monetary rewards. Students are provided 12 questions worth 10 points each. The median score on the difficult exam is typically one point out of the possible 120. Top Grove City College scorers were Mills (21 points), Weaver (18 points), Willett (18 points) and Waddell (8 points).
