GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will celebrate National French Week 2008 from Nov. 5 to 12. The French department is sponsoring the event.
Dr. Catherine Trammell, professor of modern languages at the College, said that the French week programs are in response to the American Association of Teacher of French’s initiative to raise awareness about France’s contributions in science and technology. Trammell said that the College has celebrated French week for nearly a decade.
• Nov. 5: French menu choice in the dining halls • Nov. 10: Francofollies: French students’ talent showcase from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Breen Student Union • Nov. 11: Ice cream social in recognition of French contributions to science and technology such as Louis Pasteur and pasteurized milk; there will be free ice cream from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Breen Student Union • Nov. 12: The French film “Weapons of the Spirit” will show from 7:45 to 10 p.m. in Sticht Lecture Hall in the Hall of Arts and Letters; the film is a documentary about a small village of Huguenots – French Protestants – who were challenged by the village pastor to fight Nazi ideas during World War II with “weapons of the spirit.” The villagers hid and saved 5,000 Jews, including many children, from deportation to concentration camps. The film is 90 minutes long with a five-minute introduction by PBS journalist Bill Moyers and a 20-minute optional interview with the film’s maker.
“I am especially enthusiastic about the film we’re showing this year,” Trammell said. She said that the film’s maker was one of the children saved by the village.
