GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College’s fall performance of the Shakespeare comedy “As You Like It” has been nominated for inclusion in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Philadelphia, Pa., this January.
Theatre scholars representing the Kennedy Center festival attended the November show on campus and nominated individual actors and the show as a whole for inclusion in the regional festival.
“Of over 100 productions reviewed, only about 20 get nominated. Of these 20, only five will be invited to the festival,” said Dr. James Dixon, the show’s director and the chairman of the English department at the College. “We have been nominated, and will hear if we are selected in early December.”
One of William Shakespeare’s renowned works, “As You Like It” offers a social critique, poking fun at conventional romance and noting both the pleasure and pain of being human.
This is the second time a Grove City College production has been nominated to attend a Kennedy Center festival. Last spring, English professor Betsy Craig’s production of “La Bete” was also nominated. Craig will hear whether “La Bete” was selected in December as well.
“[The nominations are] an honor for our theater program,” Dixon said. “We believed all along that we had been doing excellent work, but it is good to have confirmation of that from outside sources.”
On top of the show’s nomination, three student actors were tapped for their individual performances: senior Amanda Griswold of Clarence, N.Y., in the role of Rosalind; junior George Hampe of New Brighton, Pa., playing Orlando; and senior Chris Capitolo of Glenside, Pa., in the role of Jaques. They will compete in the acting competition at the festival. Junior Kevin Gaul of Stow, Ohio, for his work as Silvius, received an invitation to attend the festival as an alternate.
“It is quite unusual for one school to have two productions nominated in one year,” Dixon said. “This is especially true of a school entering the (festival) for the first time, as we have done this year.”
