GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 2006-07 Grove City College Guest Artist Series begins Sept. 13 with Grammy-winning Chestnut Brass, the first of four performances this year. All events will begin at 8 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on the Grove City College campus.
Chestnut Brass is a versatile quintet traveling with its own museum of modern and historical brass instruments. Founded in Philadelphia in 1977, the group strives to advance the art and skills of musical performance and the knowledge of music history. Vibrant performances include music ranging from King Henry the Eighth to Duke Ellington. Grove City College Guest Lecturer in Music Susan Sexton will perform with the group on trumpet.
Historical impersonator John "Chuck" Chalberg, Ph.D., will take the stage for the second performance Oct. 16. A historian-actor and Fulbright lecturer, he portrays significant characters from the past. At Grove City, he will portray G.K. Chesterton, an opinionated English writer who is said to have converted C.S. Lewis to Christianity, and Teddy Roosevelt, who had colorful careers as a Rough Rider, outdoorsman, historian and president.
Marvin Hamlisch, acclaimed composer and pops conductor, kicks off the second half of the series with a performance on Jan. 29. As a composer, he has won three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, three Golden Globes and a Pulitzer Prize. His compositions include the Broadway shows "A Chorus Line" and "The Goodbye Girl," and more than 40 motion picture scores, including "The Way We Were" and "The Sting." He holds the position of principal pops conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
America's premier Christian ballet company, Ballet Magnificat!, rounds out this year's Guest Artist Series with a performance March 29. With world-class dance and powerful performances, Ballet Magnificat! touring companies minister through life-impacting experiences. Their performances are designed to glorify the Lord while captivating the audience with a kaleidoscope of movement, light and sound. This show will present "Hiding Place," inspired by the true story of Corrie Ten Boom.
