GROVE CITY, Pa. – Dr. Fred Brenner, professor of biology at Grove City College, recently published three papers and created two book chapters with the assistance of several College alumni. The three papers were published in Vol. 84 and 85 of the “Journal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science.” Brenner’s co-authored book chapters will be published in “Pandemic Influenza Viruses: Science, Surveillance and Public Health” this summer.
Each of Brenner’s three published papers in the “Journal of Pennsylvania Academy of Science” was co-authored by Grove City College graduates – “Five Year Monitoring of Wood Duck Usage of Nest Boxes installed on the Melvin G. Bosley Conservancy Property, Edgewood, Maryland,” by Andrea Settle ’07; “West Nile Virus: Vector and Reservoir Potential Establishment over 10 Years of Viral History in the Western Hemisphere,” by Melissa Young ’09; and “Relationship of Bacteria Communities to Metal Removal and Water Chemistry in a Scale Model Acid Mine Drainage Treatment System,” by Shaun Busler ’00, Kim Kosick ’00, Corrie (Gardner ’00) Yoder and Carol Tippi ’00.
Brenner co-authored the book chapter, “Genetic and Stable Isotope Methodology for the Detection, Monitoring and Predication of the Spread of the Avian Influence Virus in Migratory Birds,” with Dr. Shawn Rummel ’03 and Christina A. Genareo ’10. With the aid of Dr. Candace K. McClure ’03, Brenner also co-authored “Avian Influenza (H5N1) Virus Infection: Implications for Human Populations.”
The book, “Pandemic Influenza Viruses: Science, Surveillance and Public Health,” published by the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, will be the 14th co-edited book by Brenner since he joined the Grove City College faculty in 1969.
