January 25, 2008
Dr. William Birmingham, Grove City College professor and chairman of the computer science department and professor of electrical engineering, has been awarded the 2006 Herb S. Brier Instructor of the Year Award by the American Radio Relay League, in recognition of Birmingham’s commitment to promoting amateur radio inside and outside of the classroom. He was nominated by Grove City students.
The award is named after Herb S. Brier, a long-time general call, or “CQ,” novice editor, who represented the spirit of effective, caring amateur radio instruction. The radio league sponsors this award to recognize the very best in volunteer amateur radio instruction and recruitment, in conjunction with the Lake County (Ind.) Amateur Radio Club.
Birmingham is featured in the October 2007 issue of “QST,” the league’s monthly membership journal. He was nominated for the award by students who participated in his class projects involving amateur radio.
Amateur radio, also known as “ham radio,” remains the one reliable means of short-distance and long-distance communication when landline and cell phone networks fail and is indispensable in coordinating disaster relief efforts. The American Radio Relay League was founded in 1914 and is based in Newington, Conn. For more information, go to www.arrl.org.
