April 21, 2011
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College students and art club students of Hillview Elementary School have worked throughout the 2010-11 academic year to create art, such as clay pots, platters, vases, cups and bowls, that will be auctioned at “Tapped Out,” an art auction and exhibition on April 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hillview Elementary School. The event will help to raise awareness of the global water crisis, with proceeds donated to FilterPure, a non-profit organization based in the Dominican Republic, which is currently opening a filter factory in Haiti.
The exhibition will display ‘potable art,’ household ceramic filtration devices for use in areas without safe drinking water. The pots exhibited are meant to bring attention to this filtration technology, which can also be produced inexpensively in communities where the accessibility of clean water is a concern.
“Tapped Out,” presented by the Hillview Center for the Arts, was developed through the collaboration of Cathaleen Chen, a senior at Grove City High School, and Chris Bauer, art teacher at Hillview Elementary School. Chen has worked to locate students, teachers and professional artists willing to donate their own art pieces for the auction. A member of Pure Thirst, Chen will donate the proceeds of her portion of the auction to help build a water treatment system in El Jaral, Honduras.
Pure Thirst, founded by teenagers throughout Western Pennsylvania, is an interactive organization inspired by the work of The Rice Foundation, which improved the lives of citizens by building and dedicating a water filtration system in La Cumbre, Honduras. Since August 2010, Pure Thirst has strived to raise $25,000 to construct a similar water treatment system for the village of El Jaral, Honduras.
Members of Pure Thirst plan to take a mission trip this summer to dedicate the filtration system and educate the villagers about the sustainability of clean water.
