GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College will host four organ concerts during the 2007-08 academic year, starting with a performance at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 by Derek Stauff ’03. All performances are free and open to the public and will be in the newly dedicated Parker Organ Studio of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.
Stauff, a native of eastern Pennsylvania, graduated from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in 2006 with a Masters of Music in organ performance and a Masters of Arts in musicology. He holds a bachelor of music in music education from Grove City College, where he studied organ with Dr. Richard Konzen. Currently in his second year of the Ph.D. program in musicology at Indiana University, he continued his organ studies and also sang in the Pro Arte singers. His primary research interests lie in the music of 17th and early 18th century Germany.
The series continues on Oct. 27 with a 2 p.m. performance by Dr. Edward Moore ’91, an organ faculty member with The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Music; a performance by J.R. Daniels ’89, organist and choirmaster at Pittsburgh’s St. Simon and Jude Church, at 7 p.m. Nov. 30; and a final concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 8, 2008, by Dr. John Weaver, renowned concert organist and former chairman of the organ department at The Juilliard School.
The Miriam (Shellito ’52) Parker Memorial Organ was donated by Royal Parker ’52 in memory of his wife and was dedicated in March. The tracker organ was built by Fritz Noack of Georgetown, Mass., and produces sound mechanically. Two years ago, Royal Parker was inspired to donate the organ after reading an article from Grove City College’s alumni magazine, the GeDUNK, about Daniels, one of the performers to be featured this year, who was involved in organ restoration in Pittsburgh.
