GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Shakespearean comedy “As You Like It” will take Grove City College’s main stage from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1 with performances at 7:30 p.m. daily in Ketler Auditorium of Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.
One of William Shakespeare’s renowned works, “As You Like It” offers a social critique, poking fun at conventional romance and noting both the pleasure and pain of being human.
Duke Frederick, played by senior Darin Miller of Line Lexington, Pa., has usurped the title and throne of his elder brother, Duke Senior, played by freshman Tyler Crumrine of Ligonier, Pa. Duke Senior has moved to the Forest of Arden with his followers, leaving his daughter, Rosalind, played by senior Amanda Griswold of Clarence, N.Y., behind at the court.
Orlando, played by junior George Hampe of New Brighton, Pa., and Oliver de Bois, played by freshman George Jaggers of Rising Sun, Md., enter as two brothers divided by enmity. Orlando wins a match against a champion wrestler and attracts the attention of Rosalind and the ire of Oliver. Orlando and his servant, Adam, played by sophomore Sean Morris of North Kingsville, Ohio, flee Oliver’s wrath into Arden.
Duke Frederick banishes Rosalind to Arden as he did with her father. Celia, Frederick’s daughter and Rosalind’s best friend who is played by sophomore Rebecca Sherman of Beaver, Pa., accompanies her in exile. Rosalind disguises herself as a boy named Ganymede, while Celia assumes the part of “his” sister, Aliena. They are accompanied by the clown Touchstone, played by freshman Spencer Folmar of Grassflat, Pa.
Orlando’s habit of carving Rosalind’s name in the trees and leaving love poems scattered about the forest tip her off to his presence in Arden. Still disguised as Ganymede, Rosalind lets Orlando pour his feelings out as if “he” were Rosalind. Rosalind also attempts a match between Silvius, played by junior Kevin Gaul of Stow, Ohio. and Phoebe, played by senior Megan Hendrick of DeLand, Fla.. The plan goes awry, however, when Phoebe falls instead for Ganymede. Meanwhile, Touchstone courts a country girl named Audrey, played by sophomore Abigail Van Patter of Matthews, N.C. Before the end, Rosalind must reveal her identity to all, and each love story must find resolution.
“As You Like It” is directed by Dr. James Dixon, professor and chairman of the Department of English, with directorial assistance from senior Meagan Samuelsen of Sugar Land, Texas. Senior Grace Jennings of Middlesex, N.J., will serve as technical director.
