2011 Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award Winners
Linda (Schiestle '76) Horton serves as director for the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division in the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) of the Department of Energy (DOE). prior to joining DOE, she was the director for the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (SNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), one of the five BES national user facilities for nanoscale science research. She was the first director of the CNMS, home to an interdisciplinary nanoscience research program that hosts nearly 400 users annually. In addition, she was project director fo the CNMS facility construction.
Prior to leading the CNMS, Horton was program director for the ORNL BES Materials and Engineering Physics program. During her career at ORNL, she held many management roles, including deputy division director for the Metals and Ceramics Division, group leader for Surfaces and Interfaces and group leader for Electron Microscopy. Her personal research emphasized applications of the electron microscopy to materials science problems. At ORNL, she was involved in the implementation of research programs that integrated basic and applied research.
Horton received her Ph.D. from the Universiaty of Virginia in materials science. She has been active in professional service and has served on the board of directors for the Materials Research Society, ASM International and the Microscopy Society of America. She also served on both university and international advisory committees, including for nanotechnology and for energy for the United Kindgom's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Prior to joining DOE, she was a frequent reviewer for the DOE and other agencies, including reviews of construction projects and user facility operations. Notably, she served as co-chair of the 2002 BESAC workshop -Basic Research Needs to Assure a Secure Energy Future.
Horton and her husband Joe reside in Germantown, MD, and have three children (Derek, Leanna and Scott) pursuing graduate degrees.
The Rev. Dr. Norman E. Koehler '56 serves as priest associate at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Oakmont, Pa., and a a voluteer in pastoral care at Presbyterian Senior Care.
Koehler entered active service in the U.S. Navy in 1956 following two years in inactive reserve. He became a naval aviator in 1958 and retired as a captain. He served two tours in Vietnam. Other military assignments included: Naval attache' to Greece, Commanding Officer; patrol Squadron Ten, director of strategic operations; Atlantic Command, executive assistant to Secretary of the Navy and Commanding Officer at the Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Maine. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Vietnam Medal of Valor and the Legion of Merit (three awards).
Following retirement from the Navy, Koehler worked as a senior research scientist for Lockheed Corp., as well as the director of development at Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pitsburgh. He was founding president of the Pittsburgh Episcopal Foundation and has served as an adjunct professor of business at the University of Southern New Hampshire and at Butler County Community College.
He holds an M.S. in education from the University of Southern California, a Ph.D. in education from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.A. in theology from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and is a graduate of the Defense Language School (linguist in modern Greek). He was ordained a deacon in 2002 and a priest in 2006. He and his wife Virginia (Schadt '56) Koehler reside in Pittsburgh, Pa., and have three children, Erik, Kathryn and Keith.
Michael D. Kuremsky '86 is vice president and global brand leader of Olay Skin Care, a $2.5 billion business and the world leader in facial moisturizers and treatments. He has a 20-year career in brand marketing and management with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, OH, where he has led the growth of the brand in top markets including the U.S., U.K and China, while launching Olay into many new countries, such as India, Mexico, Brazil and Russia.
In 2001, Kuremsky was recongnized by "Advertising Age" as one of the "Top 100 Marketers," an honor he shares with his sister, Kelly (Kuremsky '89) Stitt, In her work at Heinz.
Kuremsky is deeply involved in Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, a Blue Ribbon school where both of his children attend. He has served as the school's board president for the past three years, helping the academy to market itself behind its unique mission of Christ-centered academic excellence. He has also served as the president of the Fine Arts Board, directing and producing numerous stage productions and musical revues.
Additionally, Kuremsky served on the Grove City College Alumni Council, is the Greater Cincicnnati Lay Leader for Walk to Emmaus Ministry and serves on the Cystic Fibrosis Team for Life.
Kuremsky holds an MBA from Duke University. Originally from McKeesport, Pa., he now resides in Cincinnati with his wife Wendy (Knight '86) Kuremsky and his two children, Tanner and Caroline.
2011 Distinguished Service Award
C. Fred Fetterolf '52 is the retired president and chief operating officer for the Alumninum Company of America. Fetterolf served in various capacities and locations for Alcoa before returning to the home office in 1974. Moving quickly through the executive ranks, he was elected as president in 1983 and named chief operating officer in 1985. In addition to Alcoa, Fetterolf has served on the board of 12 publicly held companies.
Fetterolf was a member of the Grove City College Board of Trustees for 21 years, attending more than 115 meetings. As chair of the Change & Commitment Campaign, Fetterolf successfully led the College's first capital campaign, exceeding the campaign goal of $60 million.
Fetterolf was born in Franklin, Pa., served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from Grove City College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He has been involved in numerous community and ministry initiatives including serving as the chairman of the 1993 Billy Graham Crusade. He resides in Sewickley, Pa., with his wife Fran (Spang '52) Fetterolf.
